H5N1 Studies Made Available to Public

After 8 months of controversial debate over whether or not the results of studies on avian influenza should be made available to the public, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has put out a special issue of Science magazine documenting the findings of the research.  The content is also available online at http://www.sciencemag.org/site/special/h5n1/index.xhtml. The research offers insight into the virus’s possible path to a pandemic.  While opponents fear that the information could potentially be used for harm by bioterrorists, the publishers feel that the public health benefits of community education outweigh the risks to national security.
